This item is so versatile. The sides are less than the depth of a bumper pad, but have that feel to them. Each side has velcro so that you can change the configuration. I wish I had this for traveling with my kids when they were little! I purchased it for my visiting two-month old granddaughter, who doesn't like pack 'n plays. This is more confining; it's about the size of a bassinet. The mattress pad is thin; it is similar to the ones in a pack 'n play, but it has a cloth cover. One of the things I really liked is the solid sides that keep out drafts. My daughter is planning to use it as a transitional vehicle between the bassinet and the crib. It is great for traveling (it's very light weight) and folds up to about the size of a sleeping bag. It's closer to "rolls up" than "folds up'. I would feel comfortable using it for camping, using with a non-mobile infant on a bed, or on the floor.
